Terrorists Ambush Lawmaker Ali Damisa’s Convoy in Niger, Soldier Killed

Hon. Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, narrowly escaped death on Tuesday after suspected terrorists ambushed his convoy along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.

The lawmaker, representing Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency, was reportedly travelling to Babanna for an official engagement when heavily armed assailants opened fire without warning, throwing his security detail and aides into chaos.

Security personnel attached to the convoy quickly responded, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted several minutes. Tragically, one soldier lost his life, while several others including political aides and supporters sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses identified the attackers as members of the Lakurawa, a local term for armed bandits in the area. Reports indicate that about 11 vehicles in the convoy were damaged during the attack, leaving a scene marked by bullet holes and destruction.

Reinforcements from the Forward Operating Base in Babanna arrived shortly after, forcing the assailants to flee into the surrounding forest. Military authorities have since intensified patrols across Borgu and neighboring communities to prevent further attacks.

The incident has heightened security concerns in Niger State, especially along border areas with Benin Republic, which have become hotspots for banditry and violent attacks. Residents continue to call for increased protection as the government strengthens measures against armed groups.
