The United States ranks among the least peaceful nations worldwide in the 2025 Global Peace Index.

The United States has been ranked among the least peaceful countries in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), drawing significant attention online. The GPI evaluates more than 160 countries worldwide based on levels of crime, conflict, and military expenditures.

In 2025, the US ranked 128th out of 163 nations, falling far behind countries like Honduras, Bangladesh, and Uganda. This represents a sharp decline from its 2012 ranking, when it placed 88th out of 153 countries. The drop is largely attributed to increased violent demonstrations, political instability, high military spending, and widespread weapons imports.

The decline in peace coincides with a number of factors, including tariffs put in place by former President Donald Trump, which led to travel boycotts affecting tourism in some states.

Additionally, the US introduced stricter visa application requirements, such as mandatory in-person interviews at embassies and the provision of social media history for nonimmigrant applicants, as part of enhanced national security measures.

The Global Peace Index report also highlights that the world is currently experiencing the lowest level of global peacefulness since the index began, with 59 active state-based conflicts recorded in 2023, the highest since World War II.

The US’s low ranking in the GPI signals ongoing challenges related to domestic unrest and militarization, underscoring the complex issues faced by the country in achieving internal and external peace.
