Tinubu Declares Nationwide Security Emergency, Launches Major Recruitment Drive for Police and Army
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, rolling out aggressive measures to tackle rising terrorism, banditry, and violent attacks across Nigeria.
In a statement from Aso Rock on Wednesday, Tinubu announced an immediate expansion of the nation’s security forces, directing the Army and Police to recruit thousands of additional personnel to strengthen operations in high-risk regions.
Key Actions Announced:
- Police Recruitment: An additional 20,000 officers will be recruited, bringing the total to 50,000. NYSC camps will serve as temporary training facilities, while officers previously assigned to VIP security will undergo intensive retraining before redeployment.
- DSS Deployment: The Department of State Services (DSS) has been authorised to deploy forest guards to root out terrorists and recruit more personnel to enhance surveillance in remote areas.
- Community Engagement: Tinubu urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that public cooperation is essential in the fight against insecurity.
The President praised security agencies for rescuing 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 worshippers in Kwara State, while assuring Nigerians that efforts to free other abducted victims, including students in Niger State, will continue.
Tinubu also called on the National Assembly to consider legislation enabling states to establish their own police units. He encouraged state governments to reinforce security around boarding schools and religious centres, and emphasised the Ministry of Livestock Development’s role in ending herder-farmer conflicts.
