Tinubu Ends Rivers State Emergency, Restores Governor Fubara and Assembly Members
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, reinstating Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly, effective midnight on September 17, 2025.
In a detailed statement, the President explained that the emergency was initially declared due to a complete breakdown in governance. Conflicts between the Governor and the State Assembly had stalled critical legislation and hindered the management of the state’s resources, including oil infrastructure.
“The paralysis in Rivers State made it impossible for the government to function effectively. The state of emergency was necessary to restore order and protect public interest,” Tinubu said.
The President expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and residents of Rivers State for their support during the emergency period. He also acknowledged that some legal challenges were filed against the declaration, noting that such actions reflect the functioning of a democratic system.
Highlighting recent developments, Tinubu said there is now a renewed spirit of cooperation among stakeholders, making it possible to safely return to democratic governance.
“Effective immediately, Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Odu, and the State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, will resume their duties,” he confirmed.
Tinubu reminded leaders across the country that peace, stability, and good governance are essential for delivering the dividends of democracy to citizens.
