Tinubu Inaugurates FUTA Teaching Hospital, Pledges to Transform Nigeria’s Healthcare System
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s healthcare sector into a world-class system. He made this known in Akure, Ondo State, during the official handover of the Akure complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) to the newly established Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH).
Represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, President Tinubu said his government was working in partnership with state governments to expand healthcare access and improve medical education across the country. According to him, the new teaching hospital will significantly boost healthcare delivery, research, and training in Ondo State and Nigeria at large.
He commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his administration for their cooperation in actualizing the project, assuring all health workers transitioning to federal service of improved welfare and professional growth. Pate also praised prominent figures, including Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti and the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, for their contributions toward the hospital’s establishment.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olamide Adelami, described the handover as a transformative step in the state’s healthcare development. He noted that the partnership would bring better funding, cutting-edge equipment, and integration into global medical research networks, ensuring more effective healthcare services for citizens.
The Chief Medical Director of FUTATH, Professor Olusegun Ojo, emphasized that the facility would focus on advanced diagnostics, specialized care, and residency training, which would reduce medical tourism and improve local healthcare outcomes. He promised that the hospital would uphold the motto “Excellence with Compassionate Care,” ensuring patients receive respectful and high-quality treatment.
In his remarks, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Governor Aiyedatiwa, describing the hospital as a “gift of hope and healing” to the people of Akure. He noted that the new federal teaching hospital would save lives and bring quality medical care closer to residents.
