Tinubu Launches Construction of New INEC Headquarters, Vows to Strengthen Nigeria’s Electoral Infrastructure.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025 President Bola Tinubu marked the commencement of the build-out for a brand-new headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. The project—the first of its kind in the Federal Capital Territory’s Maitama district—was officiated at Zambezi Crescent and signals a major leap towards institutional modernization in Nigeria’s electoral framework.

Addressing the array of dignitaries at the groundbreaking, Tinubu characterized the upcoming facility as “a hub for innovation, planning, training, and transparency in electoral administration.” He reaffirmed that enhancing Nigeria’s democracy requires more than just periodic elections—it demands robust electoral bodies, equipped with modern infrastructure, sound legal supports, reliable policies, and adequate financing.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, welcomed the development, pointing out that the existing headquarters suffer from crippling overcrowding—forcing essential functions like committee meetings and stakeholder consultations to spill over into rented spaces in Wuse. He stressed that the new annex will complement the current Maitama complex, relieving strain on offices, meeting venues, and administrative operations.

President Tinubu extended heartfelt appreciation to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike praising him as the “visionary father” of the project. He also thanked INEC officers, FCT Administration leaders, contractors, and all stakeholders participating in the endeavour. Tinubu emphasized that the construction isn’t just about bricks and mortar: it represents rebuilding public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He urged everyone to prioritize “quality, speed, integrity, and transparency” during the project’s execution.

Tinubu reminded Nigerians that democracy is an “ongoing journey, not a one-time destination,” and stressed that collective responsibility is essential to strengthen institutions, safeguard freedoms, and cement democratic gains.
