Top Equatorial Guinea Official Jailed 8 Years Following Sex Tape Scandal and Embezzlement Conviction
Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former head of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a high-profile sex tape scandal that shook the nation. The ruling was handed down by a local court after Engonga was found guilty of embezzling public funds for personal gain.
Engonga, who is also a nephew of the long-serving President Teodoro Obiang Nguema gained notoriety last year when explicit videos of him with multiple women many of whom were related to influential government figures went viral on social media.
The scandal included involvement of spouses and relatives of top officials further intensifying the public outcry.
The investigation revealed that Engonga had siphoned off significant sums of money into secret accounts in the Cayman Islands, with amounts ranging from $9,000 to over $220,000.
The court also imposed a hefty fine of $220,000 on him. Authorities confiscated several electronic devices from his possession, which became the source of many of the leaked intimate videos.
There are widespread suspicions that some officials might have leaked the videos to damage his reputation.
Engonga had already been in custody for corruption charges at the notorious Black Beach prison in Malabo during the scandal’s eruption.
His conviction and sentencing are viewed by many observers as a politically charged move to eliminate his aspirations for higher office.
In response to the scandal, the government has introduced sweeping measures to prevent sexual misconduct in government offices including installing security cameras and enforcing strict disciplinary actions against officials found engaging in illicit behavior at work.
The scandal and subsequent legal actions have dealt a significant blow to the image of Equatorial Guinea a nation already grappling with poverty and governance concerns shining a light on deeply entrenched issues of corruption and abuse within the ruling elite.
