Tragedy at Afriland Towers: Tony Elumelu Expresses Grief, Apologizes for UBA Statement
Business mogul Tony Elumelu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire at Afriland Towers in Lagos, which claimed the lives of several people, including colleagues from the UBA Group community.
In a heartfelt statement, Elumelu described the past few hours as “tough,” emphasizing that the victims were more than colleagues they were family and friends. He shared that the entire UBA community is grieving alongside the families of the deceased.
Elumelu also addressed UBA Group’s initial public statement regarding the incident, acknowledging that it was issued in haste and did not fully reflect the gravity of the tragedy. He described the misstep as regrettable and assured the public that the organization is genuinely heartbroken over the loss.
“To lose colleagues in such a tragic manner is painful. Our thoughts are with their families, and we are supporting them as best as we can,” he said.
Elumelu further revealed that UBA Group paused activities to honor and reflect on the lives lost, adding, “They are irreplaceable and will remain in our memories always. May their souls rest in perfect peace, and may God comfort their loved ones and us all.”
The fire at Afriland Towers earlier this week left several dead and many others grieving, highlighting the urgent need for safety and emergency preparedness in high-rise buildings across Lagos.
