Troops Repel Boko Haram Attack on Military Base in Borno
Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a coordinated attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents on their base in Bitta, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The assault, which took place late Saturday night, was launched from the direction of the army’s defensive perimeter. According to military sources, the soldiers from the 114 Battalion (Motorised) responded swiftly with heavy firepower, engaging the terrorists in an intense and prolonged firefight.
“The troops engaged the attackers in a sustained firefight and repelled them,” a security source reported, confirming that no casualties were recorded among the soldiers. However, one terrorist was killed in the process, and an AK-47 rifle was recovered at the scene.
Following the encounter, Brigadier General Nura Abdullahi, Commander of the 26 Task Force Brigade, visited the troops at the Bitta base on Sunday to assess the situation and commend their bravery.
Also present was Brigadier General U.V. Unachukwu, Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 7 Division and Commander, Sector 1 of Operation Hadin Kai. He met with the brigade commander and frontline troops, giving directives for an immediate deployment of reinforcements and resumption of full-scale operations to stabilize the area.
In response to the recurring violence, several residents of Bitta fled to nearby Gwoza town for safety. Though the area remained calm as of Sunday evening, sources on the ground described the overall security situation as fragile and unpredictable.
