Two Killed in Gwagwalada Herders-Farmers Clash in Nigeria’s Capital

Two individuals have been confirmed dead following a violent clash between farmers and suspected herders in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The deceased have been identified as Dahiru Yakubu and Musa Yaestu, the commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) in Gurfata. The confrontation reportedly began after cows strayed into a farm and began destroying crops, prompting a violent reaction from the farmers.

According to local sources, the farmers attacked a young Fulani herder on the spot, beating him severely and causing serious head injuries. The herder’s younger brother ran home and alerted their elder brother, who reportedly retaliated by killing one of the farmers.

The conflict quickly escalated, and in the ensuing chaos, the vigilante commander Yaestu was also killed. Both victims were buried on Wednesday, as security operatives moved into the area to prevent further violence.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent clashes in rural parts of the Gwagwalada Area Council, including Paiko, Ibwa, Dobi, and surrounding communities. In an open letter, a concerned resident, Sani Usman Zakariyya, decried the continued violence and accused authorities of neglecting the plight of indigenous farmers who have faced repeated attacks from herders.

Zakariyya described the situation as inhumane and called for immediate government intervention, including an impartial investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators. He appealed directly to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that the killings must stop and that the lives of citizens must take priority over political interests.
