U.S. Embassy Temporarily Shuts Down Operations in Abuja and Lagos for Independence Day

The United States Embassy has announced the temporary closure of its offices in Abuja and Lagos on Friday, July 4, 2025, in observance of U.S. Independence Day, a national holiday commemorating the country’s declaration of independence from British rule in 1776.

The embassy confirmed that all regular consular services including visa processing, passport applications, and document legalization will be suspended for the day.

Despite the closure, the embassy has assured the public that emergency services will remain accessible through designated official channels.

Normal operations at both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos are scheduled to resume on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Independence Day, celebrated every July 4, marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the thirteen American colonies officially broke away from British colonial rule.

The U.S. Embassy encourages Nigerians and American citizens in Nigeria to stay updated through its official website and social media platforms for any urgent announcements during the closure.
