UK Court Jails Nigerian Student for Raping Teen After Fake Taxi Offer

A 29-year-old Nigerian postgraduate student, Chiemka Okoronta, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the United Kingdom for raping a 17-year-old girl in Leeds.

According to a BBC report, the incident happened after the victim’s bus stopped abruptly on March 25, leaving her stranded with no phone battery and little money.

Okoronta, who was also on the bus, offered to share a taxi with her but instead directed the driver to his flat on Morley Street, Bradford. Once there, he lured the girl inside and raped her in a locked toilet.

The teenager managed to escape after the assault and called for help using a passerby’s phone.

At Bradford Crown Court, Okoronta was found guilty of three counts of rape. The court ruled that he would serve an additional three years on extended licence and remain on the UK sex offenders register for life.

Judge Sophie McKone described Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator” who preyed on a vulnerable young girl.

“You knew she was far from home, had no phone, and no money. I am convinced that when you offered her a lift, you had already planned to rape her,”
— Judge McKone told the convict.
