UN Commission Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza Amid Intense Conflict
The report cites statements by Israeli leaders and the widespread military campaign in Gaza as evidence of intent to destroy the Palestinian population in part. It highlights the severe humanitarian crisis in the territory, including mass displacement, destruction of homes and critical infrastructure, and a declared famine in Gaza City.
Israel’s foreign ministry categorically rejected the findings, accusing the commission of relying solely on false information from Hamas and denying any intent to target civilians. Israel stresses that its military operations aim only to dismantle Hamas capabilities following the deadly October 2023 militant attack which resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and hostage-taking.
The commission argues that Israeli measures in Gaza fulfill the legal definition of genocide under the 1948 Genocide Convention, citing specific attacks on civilians and key facilities including a fertility clinic, and a pattern of conduct demonstrating genocidal intent. The report calls on the international community to take immediate measures to prevent and punish the crime of genocide.
The findings add to growing international scrutiny of the conflict, with ongoing investigations by human rights organizations and legal bodies such as the International Court of Justice. Meanwhile, Israel maintains that it complies with international law and is committed to protecting innocent civilians during its military response.
The commission’s work brings urgent attention to the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza and highlights the pressing need for international action amid a devastating conflict.
