UNIZIK Halts Final-Year Sign-Out Celebrations Citing Security Risks

The administration of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has declared an indefinite prohibition on the well-known “signing-out” festivities held by final-year students during exam periods.

The statement, released on Tuesday and signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, emphasized that the ban takes immediate effect. The university cited repeated cases of chaos, violence, and campus disruption linked to these activities as the primary reason for the decision.

“The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University wishes to inform all students that, with immediate effect, all forms of signing-off related to final examinations are banned on campus. This step was taken in response to recurring incidents of disorder and disruption associated with such events,” the statement read in part.

UNIZIK expressed concern over the presence of unauthorised persons who often join students during these celebrations, describing them as a security risk to both staff and students.

Dr. Okeke warned that any student found participating in the banned activity will face strict disciplinary measures, including possible rustication. Similarly, outsiders attempting to join the events may be arrested and prosecuted for disorderly conduct.

The Registrar reassured the university community that UNIZIK remains committed to providing a safe learning environment and will not tolerate acts that threaten peace and order on campus. Students were urged to focus on their academic responsibilities and to report any security threats or misconduct to the appropriate authorities immediately.

This move highlights UNIZIK’s focus on maintaining campus discipline and ensuring a secure environment for both students and staff amid growing concerns over unruly behaviors during examination periods.
