WAFCON 2024: A Tournament of Passion, Drama, and African Women’s Football Growth

As the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) approaches its thrilling conclusion this weekend, the tournament has delivered three weeks filled with intense drama, heartbreak, moments of joy, and historic milestones.

After 24 matches played across five Moroccan cities since July 5, the championship is now down to four teams: two finalists and two contenders for third place. Saturday will see host nation Morocco face Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the final, while Ghana and South Africa will battle for third place ahead of the championship decider.

For Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the final is part of their ambitious “Mission X” campaign as they quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. Morocco, the defending runners-up, remain unbeaten and are eager to claim the championship on home soil.

The Super Falcons have displayed dominance en route to the final, securing four wins and one draw (against Tunisia in the group stage). Morocco has matched their unbeaten form, determined to surpass their second-place finish from 2022.

Beyond the competition itself, WAFCON 2024 symbolizes the remarkable growth of women’s football across Africa 27 years after the inaugural tournament. The tournament’s atmosphere has been amplified by heartfelt pre-match interviews, emotional post-game analyses, and insightful commentary from players, coaches, and analysts.
