Waje Opens Up on Teenage Pregnancy, Absent Baby Daddy and Raising Daughter Alone

Nigerian singer Waje has shared a deeply emotional story about her early years, revealing how she became a mother at just 16 and was denied by the father of her child.

Speaking during an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, Waje recounted how she discovered she was pregnant as a teenager and hid it from her mother for five months.

According to her, when her mother eventually found out and confronted the man’s family, he outrightly denied being responsible for the pregnancy.

“In Igbo land, when a child is born out of wedlock, the family automatically adopts the child,” Waje explained. “So my mom just told him, ‘Okay, since it’s not you, the child is mine now.’

She added that her mother singlehandedly took responsibility for raising her and the baby, ensuring they never lacked anything.

Years later, the man reappeared, seeking to reconnect with his daughter, but his actions fell short of his words.

“I told him, you’re a citizen of Canada, fight for your child. I wanted her to have the best education possible,” Waje said.

They both agreed to take a DNA test, but he never followed through.

“I waited and waited. Nine months passed, then years — he still didn’t do it,” she revealed.
