The emeritus SUG President of Enugu State University of Science and Technology Donatus Okolieuwa, popularly known as Dona4All, reveals his efforts in reshaping the narrative of school politics in ESUT.
The immediate past SUG President of ESUT, Donatus Okolieuwa (Dona4All), lists his efforts in changing the negative impression that students previously had about student leaders before his tenure. “My government was centered on changing the narrative of school politics in ESUT, especially in terms of how student unions operate within the university’s political landscape,” he added.
“We changed the narrative that ESUT politics are bought with money; it is no longer about how much you have, but rather how influential and impactful you are to students,” he said. He emphasized that students should choose leaders who will represent them based on merit.
He stated that the government should give students a sense of belonging, remembering that students are the core of the university and should take part in governance. “We recognized students, seeing them as a priority and the reason why we hold positions as leaders.”
He added, “What made my regime different is that I didn’t discriminate nor act superior to students. I brought myself down to the level of ordinary students to showcase humility and to be accessible in addressing students’ needs.” He continued, “I was in so many WhatsApp groups to communicate directly with students and get to know the challenges they were facing. My government was intentional about the welfare of students,” Dona said.
He emphasized that student leaders should be close to students and show concern for their well-being as it is their right as students, assisting them and providing solutions. “This approach makes students feel relaxed and gives them a sense of belonging,” he added. “Many of the projects initiated and influenced by my government aimed to address students’ needs. Kudos to the present SUG President of ESUT, Ezenwaji Chigozie, who took up the mantle of leadership and is ensuring that some of my dreams for ESUT students become a reality.”
He concluded, “My advice to upcoming student leaders is that they should seek advice from those who have experience in school politics. And if you are already involved, maximize your position by using proper channels and fostering good relationships with the students.”
