“We Slept on Mats in Kaduna” – Skales Opens Up on Tough Childhood
Popular Nigerian singer, Skales, has shared a heartfelt reflection on his tough upbringing, revealing how he once lived in a hut with his late mother during his early years in Kaduna.
In a candid conversation on A TownHall Different Podcast, Skales recounted the struggles of his childhood, where life was so difficult that he and his mother slept on mats spread on the floor. Despite the hardships, he said those experiences shaped him into the man he is today.
“I’ve been through a lot. I come from Kaduna, from a poor family. My mum was a teacher. I used to live in a hut before we moved into a boys’ quarters. We would sleep on mats, and my mom would lay wrappers on the floor. To look back now and see where I am, it’s crazy,” he shared.
Skales also revealed that he never owned a television until he was signed to Banky W’s record label, EME. He described his first time having a TV in his own room as nothing short of magical.
“The first time I saw TV was when EME signed me. Having my own TV was unreal. I would turn it on and off repeatedly in amazement.”
His story has since sparked admiration from fans online, many of whom praised his resilience and used his journey as motivation that humble beginnings don’t determine destiny.
