Wike Blasts Military Interference in Abuja Land Dispute, Targets Retired Naval Chief
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has addressed the recent viral confrontation between his officials and military personnel at a disputed land in Abuja, vowing to stop illegal developments and hold everyone accountable, regardless of status.
During an on-site inspection on Tuesday, Wike condemned the deployment of soldiers to obstruct FCT Development Control officials from enforcing lawful orders, describing it as an unlawful and unacceptable use of military power.
“When this was brought to my attention, I instructed officials to ensure that nothing continues on the property because there were no valid approvals or legal claims. The soldiers’ intervention was completely unacceptable,” he said.
The FCT Minister accused a retired Chief of Naval Staff of allegedly directing the soldiers’ interference. Wike stressed that no one is above the law, warning that former military officials or private citizens attempting to bypass legal procedures would face enforcement actions.
“I don’t understand how a former top military officer cannot simply come to my office to discuss the matter. Using military status to intimidate civilians is intolerable,” Wike stated.
He confirmed that the supposed developers failed to present ownership documents or building approvals when requested by FCTA officials. Wike also said he had consulted the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who assured him the situation would be addressed.
The minister reiterated that the FCT Administration would continue to uphold development laws without fear or favor, ensuring that all illegal construction activities are stopped.
“We won’t allow this to happen. The law applies to everyone equally whether you’re a former naval chief or a private citizen,” Wike declared.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many expressing support for Wike’s firm stance on law enforcement and development control in the nation’s capital.
