Wike Defends Edo Governor Okpebholo, Recalls Peter Obi Once Requested Permission to Visit
FCT Minister and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has thrown his weight behind Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, amid the controversy surrounding Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s proposed visit to the state.
In a video circulating online, Wike affirmed Okpebholo’s assertion that Obi should have sought prior approval before visiting Edo. Reflecting on his tenure as governor, Wike said, “When I was Governor, Peter Obi informed me before coming to my state. The statement you made, you are quite right,” he told Okpebholo.
Governor Okpebholo recently came under fire for warning Peter Obi not to enter Edo State without his consent—a comment that sparked public outrage and condemnation from notable figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described the threat as undemocratic.
Wike’s support now adds a new layer to the debate, emphasizing what he called the importance of political courtesy and respect between leaders.
