Wike Defends Judge Housing Project, Claims Implementation is in Line with Tinubu’s Vision.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has clarified that the initiative to construct homes for judges in Abuja aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda, aimed at ensuring judicial independence, rather than personal political maneuvering.
During a media interaction on Wednesday, Wike refuted allegations suggesting that the project was designed for manipulating judges. He emphasized that the housing plan is a component of welfare measures put forth by President Tinubu for the judiciary and is part of the approved 2024 budget.
Wike stated: “(Tinubu said) ‘Where are the judges living? They have no proper housing and are therefore susceptible to political influence. As a president committed to guaranteeing judicial independence, judges must have secure homes.’”
He further elaborated, “I am not the president; I am simply fortunate to serve as a minister under this administration, tasked with executing his policies. The project received the green light from Mr. President, who presented it to the National Assembly for consideration in the 2024 budget.”
According to Wike, the initiative is crucial for relocating judges from rental accommodations to more secure housing, distancing them from potential criminal influences. He expressed his disappointment over the backlash the project has faced, particularly from legal professionals, when he believes it deserves commendation instead.
Wike affirmed, “It is not my personal policy; I am merely executing what has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly. Why should I be criticized for fulfilling the duties assigned to me?”
He concluded by noting that the criticism should shift to recognizing the necessity of the project rather than targeting its implementation.
