Wike Defends Traveling to Dubai with Sons Amid Public Outcry
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended his decision to travel to Dubai with his two sons, Jordan and Joaquin, for the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayor’s Forum, dismissing public criticism as unfounded.
The minister, who faced backlash from Nigerians accusing him of misusing public funds, stated emphatically that his actions were fully legal. “What law says my sons shouldn’t travel?
Did they sign any document? They have to know how Nigeria works,” Wike said, challenging anyone to provide evidence that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) sponsored his children’s trip.
Speculation had also circulated that Wike was grooming his sons for political careers. He clarified that his eldest, with a law background, chose a career in farming, while his other son, holding a master’s degree in economics, is engaged in real estate.
“I am proud of my children. They have brought me comfort, not trouble,” Wike added, emphasizing his desire to shield them from undue public scrutiny.
The minister’s statement comes amid growing debates about public officials’ travel with family members, highlighting the delicate balance between personal and official engagements.
While some Nigerians continue to question the propriety of the trip, Wike remains steadfast, maintaining that no law prohibits his sons from accompanying him on official duties.
