Wike: “No Government Can Solve Every Problem, Not Even in 20 Years”

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that no administration, not even the current one under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, can completely address all the challenges facing the nation’s capital.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike emphasized the complexity of governance and the unrealistic expectations placed on government performance.

“I will not say here that every problem has been solved. All problems cannot be solved even if this government stays for 20 years,” he said.

While acknowledging persistent challenges, Wike noted that his administration is actively working on impactful interventions aimed at improving residents’ quality of life.

“Government is solving problems that will at least help to improve the lives of people,” he added.

Responding to criticism about the lack of formal commissioning for certain projects, Wike clarified that only large-scale, capital-intensive initiatives are publicly commissioned.

According to him, billions of naira are often involved in such projects, making them worthy of official recognition, while smaller efforts are quietly executed without ceremonies.

“Do we really need to commission everything?” he asked rhetorically. “We showcase what’s major and financially significant.”

The minister urged media practitioners to engage more constructively with governance by joining field visits led by Mandate Secretaries to observe ongoing work across sectors like education, health, and infrastructure.

“We’re not claiming perfection,” Wike said. “But we are focused on doing what will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people — and that’s what governance should be about.”
