World Igbo Congress to Launch Federal Credit Union Bank in Boston to Empower Diaspora Businesses
The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has announced plans to launch the Igbo Federal Credit Union Bank during its 2025 annual convention, set to take place from August 29 to 31 at the Marriott Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts.
In a statement shared by the WIC Chairman, Dr. Festus Okere, revealed that the new financial institution aims to revolutionize how Igbo-owned businesses operate in the diaspora and contribute meaningfully to the economic development of their ancestral homeland.
“This year marks a turning point,” Okere stated. “The launch of the Igbo Federal Credit Union Bank is more than symbolic, it is a practical step toward transforming Igbo businesses abroad and fostering sustainable development back home. The initiative draws inspiration from the successful Igbo apprenticeship system that helped rebuild the economy of Eastern Nigeria after the Biafran War.”
According to Okere, the Boston convention is expected to attract one of the largest turnouts in WIC history, given the increasing interest among the Igbo community in both the diaspora and Nigeria. The event will feature high-profile attendees including Chief Gaius Chibueze (E-Money), Chairman of Faith Toyota, a representative of the Boston city government, and Chief Valentine Igbobi, the Chairman of the People’s Club of Nigeria International (PCNI) and the Ochiagha of Ndi Igbo in New England 2025.
Chief Igbobi has reportedly authorized full participation from the People’s Club Boston branch, while the Umuada Igbo a prominent women’s organization will also attend in significant numbers to show support.
WIC Vice Chairman, Hon. Basil Onwukwe, emphasized that political figures from Nigeria attending the convention will be carefully vetted to ensure they possess integrity and a clear commitment to the Igbo cause.
“Only individuals of proven character who have demonstrated commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of the Igbo people will be considered for attendance,” Onwukwe said.
The convention, organized by the apex pan-Igbo organization in the diaspora, will include workshops, keynote addresses, cultural displays, and investment-focused discussions, with the Credit Union Bank launch as its centerpiece.
WIC believes that the establishment of the bank will not only strengthen the financial base of Igbo entrepreneurs abroad but also serve as a dependable channel for investment into Southeastern Nigeria, potentially ushering in a new era of economic empowerment and transnational collaboration.
