“Yahoo Boys Are Not Born Criminals, They Are Victims of Society” – Nigerian Lady Sparks Debate
A young Nigerian woman has ignited a heated discussion on social media after defending internet fraudsters, popularly called ‘yahoo boys,’ as products of societal failure rather than innate criminals.
In a viral TikTok video shared via her handle @callme_naomie4, the lady argued that society is too quick to brand these young men as greedy or corrupt without understanding the pressures that push them toward fraud.
According to her, many yahoo boys began with genuine dreams but were frustrated by poverty, unemployment, and a system that she claims neglects the poor while glorifying wealth.
She explained that some young men worked hard in school with hopes of securing decent jobs, only to face limited opportunities. In such circumstances, she said, fraud starts to feel less like a crime and more like a desperate escape.
“These guys are not born criminals but victims of a society that celebrates wealth and ignores the poor. The system put them in desperation.
Yahoo is not about greed but broken dreams and silent pains. Do you know how it is to be 24 and still living in your family’s house without anything? You will feel useless for not providing,” she said.
The TikToker urged Nigerians to see yahoo boys beyond their illegal actions, emphasizing that they were once dreamers whose aspirations were crushed by a failing system.
“When we see a young man doing yahoo, let’s not see them as fraudsters but as human beings — young men who once had dreams, now trapped and victimized by society,” she added.
