Yoruba Monarchs Praise Ooni of Ife on 10 Years of Inspiring Leadership and Unity
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, have extended congratulations to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on his 10th coronation anniversary, celebrating his leadership and efforts in promoting unity across Yorubaland.
In a statement shared by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin highlighted the Ooni’s knowledge, charisma, and wisdom, noting that these qualities have fostered peace and civility in his kingdom. He prayed for continued fruitful years in the Ooni’s reign.
Oba Owoade also emphasized the importance of unity among Yoruba monarchs, underlining their shared responsibility to preserve peace, culture, and tradition. He stressed that the strength of their unity should rest on trust, understanding, and mutual interests.
The congratulatory messages come despite a previous supremacy dispute in August 2025 between the Alaafin and the Ooni over the conferment of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title. At that time, the Alaafin had described the Ooni’s action as an “affront” to his institution. The Ooni’s spokesperson then declined to respond, urging focus on narratives that promote unity rather than division.
Oba Alabi praised the Ooni for his fatherly disposition and dedication to fostering peace among Ekiti monarchs, recalling his mediation efforts between Dr. Kayode Fayemi and traditional rulers under the Pelupelu Obas in 2020. According to Oba Alabi, the Ooni’s leadership has inspired love, unity, and purpose across Yorubaland and its diaspora communities.
Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, a prince from the Giesi ruling house, ascended the throne as the 51st Ooni of Ife in 2015, receiving his staff and instrument of office during the tenure of former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola.
