Yoruba Union Demands IGP Egbetokun’s Sack Over Sowore’s Detention, Threatens Global Embassy Protests
The Yoruba socio-political group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has called for the immediate dismissal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over the controversial arrest and detention of human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, the group accused the IGP of using his office to pursue personal vendettas and suppress voices critical of the government. They described the current administration under President Bola Tinubu as increasingly repressive and warned of growing unrest if such actions continue.
“We can no longer remain silent while state institutions are turned into weapons of oppression. The police under Egbetokun have been thoroughly politicized,” the statement said.
The Union condemned the arrest of Sowore, who was reportedly detained after honoring a police invitation. They alleged that the arrest was based on a petition allegedly filed by one of the IGP’s mistresses, claiming the case is being unjustly handled by those with vested personal interests.
According to the group, the Nigerian Police Force has lost credibility, with its leadership acting like “judge and jury” in disputes involving their own allies, while using public resources to settle personal scores.
“Egbetokun is acting like a demigod, unchecked and above the law. He has even exceeded the retirement age and should not be occupying the position of IGP,” the statement added.
The Yoruba Union warned that if the IGP is not removed within 24 hours and Sowore released, it will mobilize protests at Nigerian embassies worldwide. It also called on the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), and foreign governments including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada—to impose visa bans on Egbetokun and his family members.
“President Tinubu must put national interest above personal loyalty. Refusing to act now will worsen tensions at home and tarnish Nigeria’s international image,” the Union warned.
The group emphasized that Sowore should be applauded, not persecuted, for his consistent advocacy for justice and improved welfare for police officers and Nigerian citizens alike.
“Egbetokun is digging his own grave by targeting Sowore. He will not be silenced. We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians at home and abroad to rise in protest,” the statement concluded.
