Young Executive Assistant Loses Job After Requesting Salary Increase Despite High Pay
A young lady has reportedly lost her job after asking for a salary increase from her employer, despite earning ₦650,000 monthly for just two hours of work per day.
The incident, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @UnclePamilerin, involved a fresh graduate awaiting her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posting. She had been employed for just four months as an executive assistant to a Canadian employer.
According to the post, the job entailed simple tasks such as responding to emails and scheduling the employer’s day.
After realizing the employer was wealthy, the young woman sent a request for a salary increase via email. Instead of considering her request, the employer terminated her contract immediately.
The story has sparked mixed reactions online. Agnoola S argued that sacking an employee for requesting a raise reflects poor management, while Khalid noted that declining the request and letting the employee decide whether to continue is a normal approach.
Some, like FindingSolace, questioned the reported salary, calculating that 2 hours a day for 40 hours a month at ₦650,000 seems unusually high.
Others suggested giving the employee a second chance to see if she would prove dependable.
