Austin Eguavoen Sets Conditions for Permanent Super Eagles Role, Emphasizing Commitment to Team Development

Former national team coach Austin Eguavoen has outlined specific conditions he would require to accept the role of permanent coach for the Super Eagles, emphasizing his commitment to building a competitive team. Currently serving as the interim manager, Eguavoen has expressed the need for a stable environment if he is to take on the position full-time.
In a recent interview on Brila FM, Eguavoen stated that he would need a long-term contract with patience and specific clauses to succeed in the role.

Winning is not guaranteed every week or day, he remarked, highlighting the challenges of coaching at such a high level. He indicated that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must be willing to provide him with time to develop and tweak the team as necessary.

Eguavoen, who has previously managed the Super Eagles multiple times, acknowledged the pressure associated with the job. “It’s not a small task, he said, noting that past experiences have shown him that successful coaches often require extended periods to implement their strategies effectively. He pointed out that while other coaches like Clemens Westerhof and Gernot Rohr had several years in charge, his previous tenures were often cut short, limiting his ability to build a cohesive team.
As interim coach, Eguavoen has already led the Super Eagles through crucial matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, achieving one win and one draw. He is now preparing for an upcoming double-header against Libya on October 11 and 15. Eguavoen’s performance in these matches could influence the NFF’s decision regarding his potential permanent appointment.

Eguavoen remains focused on his dual role as technical director and interim coach, emphasizing his passion for nurturing young talent in Nigerian football. My priority is giving back to football, especially to the young ones coming up,” he stated, reinforcing his commitment to developing future stars. As discussions continue about his future with the Super Eagles, Eguavoen’s conditions reflect a desire for stability and support from the NFF, essential elements for fostering success in Nigerian football.
