Bemgba Iortyom Criticises Regional Security Framework, Advocates Home-Grown Security Measures
Bemgba Iortyom, a senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, has raised concerns over the Northern security arrangement, which pools resources from 19 northern states to support a joint regional security framework.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Iortyom argued that the initiative including a monthly N1 billion contribution per state, plans for state police, a temporary suspension of mining activities, and the Northern Security Trust Fund does not adequately address Benue State’s specific security needs.
He insisted that resources should instead be deployed to strengthen local security structures, including community policing and improved coordination with federal security agencies.
Iortyom also stressed that the state-specific approach would better serve rural communities impacted by insecurity.
He cautioned that any implementation of state police must include clear legal frameworks, administrative structures, and accountability measures.
Regarding the proposed six-month suspension of mining activities, Iortyom advocated for stronger internal regulatory mechanisms to ensure responsible operations, while calling for transparency and measurable benefits from the Northern Security Trust Fund.
He emphasised that Benue’s security needs are unique, urging stakeholders to ensure that policies align with the state’s long-term welfare.
