Breaking News…Court Stops Mburubu Igweship Election

The Enugu State High Court has issued an order restraining Mburubu Town Union from conducting, observing, or assisting in any election into the Traditional Igweship Stool of Mburubu Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, Justice R. O. Odugu granted an interim injunction barring the respondents, their agents, or any representatives from conducting or facilitating any election in Mburubu Community, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

According to reports, the order followed a motion ex-parte filed by Chief Edwin Onwuka, the Secretary of Mburubu Igwe’s Cabinet, and Chief Sylvanus Njoku on behalf of the Igwe’s Cabinet of Mburubu, which sought to restrain the Mburubu Town Union, who are the 6th respondent to the suit, or any of their representatives from conducting any election in the community.

The suit, marked E/162M/2025, lists the Attorney-General of Enugu State and the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs as respondents, alongside Hon. Emmanuel Edeh, Mr. Nwosu John, Mr. Ogbonna Igbudu, and Mr. Nwankwo Samuel, representing the Mburubu Town Union (MTU), who had earlier scheduled to hold an election in the community on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Applicants, through their counsel, Nnamdi B. Aneke Esq., argued that the planned election should not proceed, citing unresolved issues surrounding the selection process, which dwells so much on the constitution of the community.

The motion, also supported by an affidavit deposed to by Chief Ezekwe Onwuka of Uhuagu Village, Mburubu, was later granted by the presiding judge, Justice R. O. Odugu, who adjourned the case to March 6, 2025, for further hearing.
