Deputy Comptroller Mohamed Shuaibu, the team’s coordinator, credited enhanced patrols, surveillance, and intelligence gathering along border areas for the disruption of smuggling operations. He highlighted the negative impacts of smuggling and illegal migration, including economic destabilization, insecurity, and exploitation of vulnerable populations.

The seized items included: 816 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each), 802 jerry cans of PMS (25 liters each), 285 bales of second-hand clothes, 61 jumbo sacks of used shoes, 674kg of cannabis sativa, 8 used vehicles

Shuaibu emphasized the Customs Service’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s economy and national security, aligning with the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance policy on smuggling. The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized goods for the past month was ₦556.43 million, with an additional ₦8.02 million raised from the auction of PMS due to its flammability. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the contraband. The 674kg of cannabis seized has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation, with Shuaibu warning of the severe societal consequences of illicit drug trafficking, which is often tied to organized crime and violence.
