In a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash, Enyimba FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Akwa United, reinforcing their position in the league standings. The match took place on September 22, 2024, at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
The only goal of the match came in the second half, with Enyimba capitalizing on a defensive error by Akwa United.

The home team dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities, but it wasn’t until the 67th minute that they found the back of the net. A well-placed cross from the right wing was met by striker Chijioke Akuneto, who headed the ball past the Akwa United goalkeeper, securing all three points for Enyimba.
Enyimba’s solid defence played a crucial role in maintaining their lead, effectively neutralizing Akwa United’s attacking threats throughout the match. Goalkeeper John Noble made several key saves, ensuring his team kept a clean sheet.

The victory marks Enyimba’s third consecutive win in the league, placing them firmly in the top tier of the NPFL standings.
Following the match, Enyimba’s head coach expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, highlighting their resilience and tactical discipline. We knew it would be a tough game against Akwa United, but our players executed the game plan perfectly, he stated.

The loss leaves Akwa United struggling near the bottom of the table, raising concerns about their form as they approach the next phase of the season. Coach Abdul Maikaba acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, We need to regroup and address our defensive lapses if we want to turn our season around. With this victory, Enyimba FC continues to build momentum as they aim for a strong finish in the NPFL, while Akwa United faces critical matches ahead to secure their place in the league.
