Kano Court Blocks Parties’ Attempt to Stop Nomination Fees Collection

A Kano State High Court has stopped the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, and 19 other political parties from hindering the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting nomination fees from applicants ahead of the October 2024 Local Government Council elections .

The parties had protested the nomination fees set by KANSIEC at N10 million for chairmanship and N5 million for councillorship positions, describing them as outrageous. They argued that the fees must be reduced and that there wasn’t enough time before the election.

However, after hearing submissions from the plaintiffs’ representatives, the court ruled in favor of KANSIEC, issuing an interim injunction that allows the commission to proceed with its statutory responsibilities. The parties were restrained from taking any steps that would hinder the electoral body from organizing, conducting, regulating, and supervising the local elections.

The case has been adjourned to October 10, 2024, for the hearing of the motion on notice. This court decision ensures that preparations for the October polls will continue uninterrupted.
