PDP Members Storm U.S. Embassy, Urge Global Action to Protect Nigeria’s Democracy
Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday held a peaceful demonstration at the United States Embassy in Abuja, calling for urgent international intervention to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic system.
The protesters, waving placards with messages such as “Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria” and “Save Our Democracy,” accused the ruling party of undermining democratic principles and attempting to turn the country into a one-party state.
They submitted protest letters to the U.S. Embassy, the European Union mission, and the Federal Ministry of Justice, appealing for diplomatic support to protect the judiciary and ensure fair political participation.
Speaking during the demonstration, one of the protesters said the group’s goal was not to discredit the government but to draw attention to “growing political intimidation and erosion of opposition rights.”
The protest comes amid heightened internal crisis within the PDP. Over the weekend, the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) suspended the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and other senior officials.
In response, Anyanwu’s faction countered with the suspension of Damagum, the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and several others. Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, loyal to Anyanwu, has since taken charge at the party’s national headquarters, deepening the leadership tussle.
Political observers warn that the prolonged crisis could further weaken the opposition and tilt the balance of power, threatening Nigeria’s multiparty system.
“We are appealing for international support to defend our democracy before it collapses completely,” one of the protesters declared.
