Peter Obi Thanks Tinubu for Visiting Benue, Urges Same Compassion for Flood-Hit Niger State

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for finally deciding to visit Benue State following the recent massacre by suspected herdsmen. Obi acknowledged Tinubu’s rescheduling of his Kaduna State visit to prioritize Benue amid nationwide calls for the president to address the security crisis there.

However, Obi urged the president to extend the same compassion and attention to Niger State, which is grappling with devastating floods that have claimed over 200 lives and left more than 1,000 missing in Mokwa alone. He emphasized that the president’s presence in these grieving communities would provide much-needed reassurance and hope.

Highlighting the proximity of both states to Abuja—282 km to Makurdi (Benue) and 287 km to Mokwa (Niger)—Obi compared Tinubu’s planned visits to the recent example of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who travelled over 1,800 km to visit flood victims, underscoring the importance of visible leadership in times of crisis.

Obi called on Tinubu to send a strong message that every Nigerian life matters, regardless of location, and urged increased security measures, especially in disaster-prone areas. He stressed the need for proactive leadership that combines compassion with decisive action, rather than remote or delayed responses.
