Political Crisis in Rivers State Poses Threat to Democracy, Urges Okupe for Urgent Resolution.

Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has expressed concern over the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, warning that it could jeopardize the nation’s democracy. In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he emphasized that the ongoing conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, is reminiscent of historical political strife that contributed to the downfall of past governments.

Okupe described the situation as dire, noting that if left unaddressed, it could lead to instability across the nation. He urged the Federal Government and concerned citizens to intervene promptly to prevent further deterioration of the situation. The rivalry between Wike and Fubara has intensified following the council elections on October 5, which resulted in violent clashes and the destruction of local government properties.

The Court of Appeal’s recent decision to nullify the state’s 2024 budget, which was passed by Fubara’s faction in the House of Assembly, has added to the uncertainty. Okupe believes that only a political resolution can effectively address the ongoing unrest and restore peace in the state.
