Super Eagles Set to Discover AFCON 2025 Opponents in Morocco Draw

January 27, 2025 – The Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, are intensifying their preparations for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Following a disappointing performance in previous tournaments, the team is focused on reclaiming their status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

The Super Eagles have already secured their spot in the tournament by topping Group D with ten points from four matches, including a crucial victory over Libya that was awarded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

With only one point needed from their remaining qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, the team is poised to build on their strong showing.

Head coach Eric Sekou Chelle, who has instilled tactical discipline and an attacking philosophy into the squad, emphasized the importance of consistency and mental fortitude as they aim for success in Morocco.

Key players such as Victor Osimhen, the reigning African Player of the Year, and Ademola Lookman, who has been pivotal in the qualifiers, will be crucial to Nigeria’s ambitions.

The Super Eagles have established a training camp in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where they are preparing for their upcoming match against Benin Republic.

The team is currently training with 22 players, including captain William Ekong and other notable talents like Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon.

The atmosphere in camp has been reported as positive, with players eager to secure a strong start to their AFCON campaign.

Nigeria enters the tournament with a rich history in AFCON, having won three titles (1980, 1994, 2013) and finishing as runners-up five times. The Super Eagles are aiming to secure their fourth title this year and have been recognized for their potent attacking lineup. However, questions remain regarding their defensive cohesion which could be tested against top-tier opposition.

As the Super Eagles prepare for the AFCON in Morocco, expectations are high among fans and analysts alike.

With a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, Nigeria is determined to make a significant impact at the tournament and reclaim their place at the top of African football.

The upcoming matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda will be critical as they finalize their preparations for what promises to be an exciting AFCON campaign.
