As of January 13, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced his willingness to exchange two captured North Korean soldiers for Ukrainian prisoners of war currently held by Russia.
This proposal follows Ukraine’s confirmation that it captured the North Korean soldiers on January 9, while they were reportedly fighting alongside Russian troops in the Kursk region.
Zelensky’s offer came shortly after South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) verified the capture of the two soldiers, who were injured during combat. In a statement shared on social media, Zelensky expressed hope that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could facilitate the exchange, stating that, Ukraine is ready to hand over Kim Jong Un’s soldiers to him if he can organize their exchange for our warriors who are being held captive in Russia.
The captured soldiers are currently receiving medical treatment in Kyiv and are being interrogated with assistance from South Korean intelligence. Reports indicate that one soldier has a visible jaw injury, while the other has bandaged hands.
Their presence marks a significant moment, as this is the first instance of Ukraine capturing North Korean military personnel during the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky further mentioned that for North Korean soldiers who do not wish to return home, alternative options may be available, particularly for those willing to promote peace by sharing the truth about the war in Korean.
This statement highlights the complexities of international alliances and military engagements amid the ongoing conflict. The situation underscores the increasing involvement of North Korean troops in Russia’s military operations against Ukraine.
Analysts estimate that around 11,000 North Korean soldiers are currently stationed in the Kursk area, with significant casualties reported among their ranks.
Zelensky’s proposal reflects a strategic maneuver within the broader context of international relations and military dynamics.
As discussions surrounding the potential exchange unfold, this development could have far-reaching implications for both Ukrainian and North Korean forces involved in the conflict. The international community continues to monitor this evolving situation closely.
