In a decisive turn of events, an Emergency Sitting of the Awgu Legislative Council unfolded yesterday, under the leadership of Hon. Mrs. Chika Helen Nwankwo, the Majority Leader of the House. The session saw the participation of seven out of the eleven Honourable Councillors in Awgu Local Government Area (LGA).

The pivotal moment during the Sitting came when Hon. Okonkwo Kennedy Nosike put forth a motion for the reinstatement of Hon. Engr. Udeh Chukwuemeka Francis, an action backed by Hon. Brown Moses Okolie, the Councillor representing Ogugu/Ugbo/Owelli/Amoli ward. With the motion approved, Hon. Engr. Udeh Chukwuemeka Francis assumed his role as the Leader, presiding over the rest of the session.

A subsequent twist in the proceedings took shape when Hon. Udeh Anthonia introduced a motion to suspend Hon. Mrs. Nnenna Umeh, the Councillor representing Mgbidi/Mmaku ward. The motion gained support when seconded by Hon. Udeh Kennedy Nosike.

The charges leveled against Hon. Mrs. Nnenna Umeh included an array of serious allegations, such as fraudulent misrepresentation, misappropriation of funds, engagement in illegal meetings, unauthorized sharing of classified information, blatant disregard for standing rules, and a violation of the Oath of Office.

Mirroring the circumstances surrounding Hon. Nnenna Umeh, another motion surfaced advocating for the suspension of Hon. Kelechukwu Nwankwo from Awgu ward II. This motion was initiated by Hon. Miracle Somtochukwu Nwigwe of Agbogugu ward, with the support of Hon. Brown Moses Okolie of Ogugu/Ugbo/Owelli/Amoli ward.

In light of the grave violations attributed to them, the Council came to the unanimous decision to suspend Hon. Nnenna Umeh and Hon. Kelechukwu Nwankwo. The suspensions will remain in effect pending the resolution of the allegations brought against the two Honourable Councillors.

The Emergency Sitting stands as a remarkable moment in the annals of Awgu’s political history, underscoring the Council’s commitment to upholding the principles of accountability, integrity, and adherence to the rule of law.
