After two and a half years in office, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State in Nigeria has finally decided to conduct local government elections in the state.
Soludo had promised to hold the elections within six months of taking office, but the promise remained unfulfilled until recently. The delay in conducting the elections had resulted in the stoppage of allocations to local governments in the state.
The last local government elections were held over 10 years ago in January 2014. After the state assembly ratified the appointment of members of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), Soludo swore them into office and urged them to ensure a credible election.
The commission has now announced that the local government elections will take place on September 28, 2024. However, members of opposition parties have expressed discontentment, accusing Soludo of ambushing them with the sudden announcement.
