Benue State communities sign peace accord to end boundary dispute

Published on

Bonta and Okpute, two communities in Konshisha and Oju Local Government Areas of Benue State, have taken a significant step towards peace by signing a comprehensive agreement to end the hostilities stemming from a long-standing boundary dispute. Orchestrated by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany, this peace agreement holds the potential to foster harmonious coexistence and development in the region.

Notably, the communal clashes had taken a tragic turn in April 2021, resulting in the ambush and murder of 11 soldiers, including a captain deployed to reinforce security in the midst of the conflict.

The accord is a culmination of efforts to encourage all parties involved in the clashes to embrace peaceful coexistence and harmony. Under this agreement, both communities pledge to eschew conflicts and work collaboratively towards the overall development of Benue State.

Witnessing the signing of the Konshisha-Oju Natural Resource Peace Agreement at Benue Hotel, Makurdi, Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, emphasized the pivotal role that peace plays in achieving sustainable development and economic growth. He highlighted the importance of traditional leaders, religious figures, women, and youth in promoting peace and mutual coexistence among border communities.

In his address, Dr. Chris Agoha, the Country Manager of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, emphasized that the peace agreement aligns with the communities’ aspirations for comprehensive peace and development, particularly benefiting vulnerable populations affected by the crisis.

Former Vice Chancellor of the Benue State University, Prof. Charity Angya, called upon the Benue State Government to operationalize the Peace and Reconciliation Commission, underscoring its potential to foster peace and development within the state. She also commended CHD for facilitating the peace initiative between the two communities.

The Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, HRM John Odogbo, expressed their commitment to the agreement’s execution and lauded the Benue State Government for its collaboration with CHD in promoting peace within the state.
