A significant number of terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers managed to flee from the Koutoukalé prison in the Republic of Niger. The prison, situated close to the capital city of Niamey, experienced a violent uprising on Thursday, overpowering the guards and allowing the inmates to escape with both weapons and vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots and explosions emanating from within the prison around noon, leading to a swift reaction from security forces. By the time authorities arrived, the inmates had already seized control of the prison, breaching armored gates, barbed wire, and trenches.
Prior to this incident, there were two unsuccessful attempts by terrorists to launch attacks on the prison. The country’s Interior Minister issued a radio message to all governors, confirming the escape and urging village chiefs and religious leaders to immediately report any suspicious individuals.
A curfew has been enforced in the Tillabéri region, and heightened vigilance is in place across the entire River Niger region in response to this alarming situation.
