Canada Urges Citizens to Leave Lebanon Amid Escalating Violence, Calls for Protection of Civilians

The Canadian government has issued a strong advisory urging its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country while commercial flights remain available, citing the increasingly volatile security situation fueled by escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly condemned the ongoing violence and called for immediate de-escalation, emphasizing the need for all parties to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.

In a statement released on September 26, 2024, Joly highlighted the deteriorating conditions in Lebanon, stating, “The security situation is becoming increasingly volatile and unpredictable due to sustained and escalating violence.” She reiterated that Canadians currently in Lebanon should prioritize their safety by departing as soon as possible.

The government is not currently offering assisted evacuations, and citizens are advised to make their own travel arrangements. Joly’s remarks come in light of recent reports indicating that over 700 people have died amid intensified Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions. Tragically, two Canadians were confirmed among those killed in the recent conflict.

The Foreign Affairs Minister urged Canadians to consult the government’s travel advisories regularly and register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service for important updates.

Joly expressed deep concern for civilians caught in the crossfire, stating, “We condemn the killing of civilians and humanitarian workers, including women and children.” She called on all parties involved to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of non-combatants.

The Canadian government is closely monitoring the situation and has increased diplomatic staff in Lebanon to assist citizens seeking to leave. While no military flights are being organized at this time, the government has reserved blocks of seats on commercial flights for Canadians wishing to depart.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also emphasized the urgency of leaving Lebanon, stating, “The time to leave Lebanon was weeks ago, but if you’re still there, you need to leave if you are a Canadian.” As tensions continue to rise, Canada remains focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad.
