Muslims all over the world, especially in Nigeria, have been enjoined to use this year’s Eid El Kabir celebrations to reflect on the importance of sacrifice, charity, and unity in the development of society.
The Ìgwè-elect of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr., made this known on Sunday in his Eid El Kabir message, which he sent to newsmen in Enugu.
He stated that the feast underscores the essence of sincerity of our intentions and commitment to righteousness, which are values that one should embody.
Citing the Holy Qur’an, Chief Ogbonna highlighted that “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you” (Qur’an 22:37), emphasizing that the true spirit of the celebration lies in our devotion and good deeds.
He also urged Muslims to remember the less fortunate during this period, reflecting on the teaching of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who said, “He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry.”
He encouraged the faithful to practice compassion and generosity by extending a helping hand to neighbors, regardless of their faith, and by sharing the blessings of the feast.
The Ìgwè-elect of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom also conveyed his prayers and best wishes to those who have performed or are planning to undertake Umrah, the pilgrimage to Mecca.
He reminded them of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) words: “Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one” (Sahih Bukhari), and prayed that their pilgrimage strengthens their connection with Allah (SWT) and that their prayers be answered.
Chief Ogbonna called for unity and peace in Nigeria, urging citizens to overcome challenges through collective efforts. He quoted the Qur’an: “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided” (Qur’an 3:103), and stressed the importance of standing together irrespective of differences to build a prosperous and harmonious society.
He concluded his message by wishing all Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid El Kabir, praying for health, happiness, and prosperity for all.
Chief Ogbonna, however, encouraged everyone to continue praying for those in need and to strive for a world filled with peace and compassion.
The statement reads:
Press Statement on the 2024 Celebration of Eid El Kabir Celebration
Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters,
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. On this blessed occasion of Eid El Kabir, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all Muslims, particularly those in Nigeria. Eid El Kabir, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is a time of profound spiritual significance, commemorating the unalloyed faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to Allah (SWT).
Eid El Kabir reminds us of the values of sacrifice, charity, and unity. As the Holy Qur’an states, “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you” (Qur’an 22:37). This verse underscores the essence of our celebrations: the sincerity of our intentions and our commitment to righteousness. As we celebrate, let us remember the true spirit of the feast and strive to embody these values in our daily lives.
In this period of festivity, it is crucial to remember those who are less fortunate. The act of Qurbani (sacrifice) teaches us the importance of giving and sharing. Let us reach out to our neighbors, irrespective of their faith, and extend a helping hand to those in need. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry.” Let this Hadith inspire us to practice compassion and generosity.
To those who have performed Umrah or are planning to undertake this blessed journey, may Allah accept your pilgrimage and grant you His infinite blessings. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one” (Sahih Bukhari). This journey not only cleanses your soul but also strengthens your connection with Allah (SWT). May your prayers and supplications be answered.
As we gather with family and friends to mark this holy festival, let us also pray for peace and unity in our beloved country, Nigeria. Our nation faces numerous challenges, but together, we can overcome them. The Qur’an reminds us, “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided” (Qur’an 3:103). Let us stand united, irrespective of our differences, and work towards a prosperous and harmonious society.
Furthermore, I urge everyone to adhere to the teachings of Islam by promoting love, understanding, and tolerance. Our diversity should be our strength, and by respecting each other’s beliefs and traditions, we can build a more inclusive community. Let this Eid El Kabir be a testament to our shared values and our commitment to peace.
I wish all Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid El Kabir. May Allah (SWT) bless you and your families with happiness, health, and prosperity. As we celebrate, let us continue to pray for those who are suffering and for a world filled with peace and compassion.
Signed,
Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr.
