Once upon a time, in the beautiful city of Enugu, there was a sense of excitement and hope as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah took office on May 29, 2023. Enugu, known as the Coal City, was once a thriving hub of commerce and industry, but over the years, its road infrastructure had seen a decline, necessitating significant improvements to ensure seamless mobility for all.
Upon assuming office, Governor Mbah was determined to change this narrative. With a vision to transform Enugu into a modern and vibrant city, he set out to tackle the challenge of road infrastructure head-on. And what a year it has been!
As we speak, the Annunciation Junction-Emene Road, spanning 1.245 kilometers, is undergoing a massive transformation. The once-bumpy road is now being reconstructed, much to the delight of commuters who use this route daily. Not far from there, the Market Garden Road (Abakaliki Close), stretching 0.65 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life. The once-narrow road has been expanded and rehabilitated, easing the flow of traffic and reducing congestion. The Lagos Street, a major artery in the city, has been revamped, covering a distance of 1.5 kilometers. The New Market/Odegba Road – Forest Hill Iva-Valley, spanning 2.45 kilometers, is also undergoing reconstruction, much to the joy of residents and business owners in the area. But that’s not all! The Chijioke Agu-John Okwor-New Society Road, covering 1.21 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded, while the Owo Premier Layout/Goshen Road, stretching 2 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt.
The Airport Flyover, a critical link to the Enugu Airport, has been reconstructed, covering a distance of 8.4 kilometers. And the Independence Layout Flyover, spanning 0.66 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded, easing traffic flow in the area. The Afia Abakpa-NOWAS Junction Road, covering 1.75 kilometers, has been reconstructed, while the Cornerstone/Ugwuani to Ikegbunam Road, spanning 1.41 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded. The Ikegbunam Junction – Liberty Bus Stop Road, covering 0.55 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life, while the Texaco Bus Stop – Ifo Road, stretching 1.98 kilometers, has been reconstructed.
The access road to the 9th Mile Crash Programme, covering 1.7 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded, while the New Enugu City Road, spanning 17 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt. The Owo/Ubahu/Ama Nkanu/Neke/Ikem Dual Carriage Road, covering 37.8 kilometers, is undergoing reconstruction, while the Amechi Idodo/Amagunze Road, spanning 14.3 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded.
The Ama Brewery Junction Eke-Akama Owa Road, covering 40 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life, while the Akwuke Road from Police Station Garriki to Coal Mining Site, spanning 6.612 kilometers, has been reconstructed. The emergency road construction of Agumgbuji – Ogbete Road, Eha Amufu, in Isiuzo Local Government Area, covering 21.73 kilometers, is nearing completion, while the Enugu to Ebonyi State Border Road Route 25 (A343), spanning 21.5 kilometers, has been reconstructed.
The Akpoga – Ezi Obodo – Mbulu Owo – 17th Junction Road, covering 21.2 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded, while the Mbulu – Owo -Ndiagu Owo Road, spanning 42 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt.
The Spurs to Ndiagu Owo Road, covering 17 kilometers, has been reconstructed, while the Mbulu – Amaeke – Amauzam Ohuani Road, spanning 20 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded. As we speak, the Enugu Airport flyover through Abakpa Junction, covering 82 Division to Ogui Junction (Zoo Junction), is undergoing reconstruction. The Ogui Junction to Otigba Junction to New Haven by Bisalla Junction Road, spanning 20 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life.
The Chime Avenue through Bisalla road through Okpara Square to Toscana roundabout Road, covering 15 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded, while the Toscana Roundabout to Goshen Roundabout Road, spanning 10 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt. The Prisons Roundabout to CPS to Akwata to Mgbemene Roundabout to CIC to Zik Avenue Road, spanning 12 kilometers, has been reconstructed. The Okpara Avenue to Market Garden Roundabout to ESCET (former IMT) Road, covering 8 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life.
The Market Garden Roundabout through Tunnel to Ogui Road to Eastern Shop to Onu Asata to Presidential Road to ESBS Roundabout to Enugu Portharcourt Expressway Road, spanning 25 kilometers, is undergoing reconstruction. The Prisons Roundabout to Enugu State Housing Corporation (Kingsway Road), covering 5 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded.
The Ministry of Lands to Colliery Avenue Road, spanning 4 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt. The Colliery Avenue by Station Road to EEDC Okpara Avenue Road, covering 3 kilometers, has been reconstructed. The New Market Roundabout – Agu Abor Interchange Road, spanning 10 kilometers, is nearing completion. The Ekochin Junction with Adjoining Roads – Enugu Ngwo Road, covering 12 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded.
The Ekochin Junction 9th Mile – Meat Market 9th Mile Road, spanning 8 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life. The Coca Cola Roundabout with Adjoining Roads to Enugu Onitsha Expressway Road, covering 15 kilometers, is undergoing reconstruction.
The New Market Roundabout to Road Safety to All Saint Church Road, spanning 5 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded. The Dahmija Junction to CBN Quarters Road, covering 4 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt. The Rangers Avenue Road, spanning 3 kilometers, has been reconstructed. The All Saint Axis, GRA Road, covering 2 kilometers, has been given a new lease on life.
The SPAR to Edozie Junction Road, spanning 4 kilometers, is undergoing reconstruction. The painting of kerbs and patching of potholes along Park Avenue Road, covering 5 kilometers, has been completed. The painting of kerbs and patching of potholes/overlay along Nza Street Road, spanning 3 kilometers, has been given a fresh coat of asphalt. The removal of speed breakers and repair of potholes NOWAS to Ugwogo Nike RA Road, covering 10 kilometers, is nearing completion.
The Nike Lake Junction to Caritas University Road to Adoration Road, spanning 12 kilometers, has been repaired and expanded. The Rangers Avenue Road, spanning 3 kilometers, has been reconstructed.

From the reconstruction of major roads like Annunciation Junction-Emene Road and Owo/Ubahu/Ama Nkanu/Neke/Ikem Dual Carriage Road to the repair and expansion of critical link roads like Airport Flyover and Independence Layout Flyover, the impact on commuters and residents is significant. The Zero Tolerance/Overlay Projects have also addressed issues like potholes and congestion, ensuring a smoother travel experience. Kudos to Governor Mbah and his team for their dedication to transforming Enugu into a modern and vibrant city!
