China, Iran, and Russia Strengthen Military Ties with Joint Naval Drills in Gulf of Oman

China, Iran, and Russia have launched joint naval exercises in the Gulf of Oman under the banner Maritime Security Belt 2025, signaling a strengthening of military cooperation among the three nations. The drills, which began on Tuesday, come amid heightened tensions with the United States and concerns over regional security.

The exercises are taking place near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s crude oil is transported.

The region has historically been a hotspot for maritime disputes and military confrontations, particularly involving Iran.

According to reports, the drills aim to enhance coordination between the participating navies in areas such as counter-piracy operations, damage control, and search-and-rescue missions.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed its participation with two corvettes and a tanker from its Pacific Fleet. Similarly, China’s Defense Ministry deployed a guided-missile destroyer and a supply ship. Observers from countries like South Africa, Qatar, and Pakistan were also present during the exercises.

This marks the fifth consecutive year of such collaboration between these nations. Analysts suggest that these maneuvers not only demonstrate military strength but also serve as a counterbalance to what the participating countries perceive as U.S. dominance in the region.

The drills have drawn international attention due to their timing. Shaun Robertson, an intelligence analyst at EOS Risk Group, noted that GPS disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz coincided with the exercises, likely caused by electronic jamming. This interference underscores the increasing militarization of the area.

While Iran has framed these drills as a commitment to regional security, critics argue they reflect deepening ties among authoritarian regimes opposing Western influence.

The ongoing collaboration among China, Iran, and Russia highlights shifting global alliances and escalating geopolitical tensions.
