Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost her bid to claim ownership rights to the popular Netflix series “Shanty Town” after a legal battle with filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.
Ini Edo and her production company, Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP), had filed a petition in January 2024 against Nworah and her company, Giant Creative Media Limited (GCM), seeking to claim trademarks and copyrights associated with the series.
The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Trademark Registry ruled in favor of Nworah, dismissing Ini Edo’s petition as “frivolous and without substance.”
In a separate ruling, the NCC denied Ini Edo’s request to cancel two copyright certificates issued to Nworah for the “Shanty Town” literary and audiovisual works.
Nworah’s lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, hailed the victory as a win for creative rights, emphasizing the importance of protecting artists’ work and ensuring fair compensation.
