Popular Afrobeats musician David Adekele popularly known as Davido mistakenly stated that Nigeria comprises only three tribes: Yoruba, Igbo, and Benin.

During a recent encounter with the popular American content creator Kai Cenat, who is currently in Nigeria for a project, Davido misspoke, asserting, “We have three main tribes in Nigeria – Yoruba, Igbo, and Benin.

Your origin is determined by your father, so I am Yoruba because my father is Yoruba. My wife hails from the Igbo tribe, and my mother is of Benin descent. I embody three tribes in one.”

Despite Davido’s comment, a report from the National Bureau of Statistics contradicts this claim, stating that Nigeria is home to 371 distinct tribes, with the largest being the Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba communities.
