Edo APC Claims Obaseki’s Teacher Recruitment Is a Political Trap for Incoming Governor

Published on

In the final days of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration in Edo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused him of setting traps for his successor, Monday Okpebholo, by recruiting 4,000 teachers. Prince Kassim Afegbua, a member of APC’s Transition Committee, expressed his concerns in a statement released in Benin City.

Afegbua criticized Obaseki’s sudden move to recruit teachers, stating that throughout his tenure, the governor failed to make significant hires to enhance the educational sector. He described the recruitment as a politically motivated maneuver, aimed at exacerbating challenges for the incoming administration.

He also urged the public, particularly those newly recruited, to view the exercise skeptically, labeling it a scheme by Obaseki, who has been accused of misusing educational initiatives like EdoBest for personal gain. Afegbua pointed out that Obaseki’s predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, had successfully recruited 2,500 teachers before leaving office, a process Obaseki halted due to alleged animosity.

Looking ahead, Afegbua assured that Okpebholo’s administration would prioritize fair and transparent recruitment processes to improve the state’s educational landscape. He emphasized that politicizing teacher recruitment would jeopardize the legacy of any governor.
